What data do we collect?
The app is designed to administer an academic study to examine child development—it both presents the stimuli while also recording the necessary data. This data includes:
Names and date: given by user to provide legal consent to participation
Video recording: video is recorded from the front-facing camera only while the visual stimuli are present on screen. No video will be recorded outside of this time. This data is crucial to the core functionality of the project, as it is the only data that allows us to collect a quantifiable reaction to the stimuli.
Metadata: metadata about the user’s interaction with the app will be collected and uploaded as soon as the user has consented to participation in the study. This includes:
Dates and times the app was used
Progress made on the app (e.g. which screens the user saw, whether the experiment was run and completed, and whether data was sent)
Information about the iPad being used including screen width/height, operating system, which version of the app was being used, and IP address
What do we do with the data?
All data collected by the app is uploaded securely to Box.com. Box.com is a highly secure online data storage system, and access to files stored on Box is strictly limited to only academic researchers who are involved in the project and are approved by the ethics review committee.
Information provided in consenting (names and date) are sent automatically to Box once completed. If left incomplete, then by default consent has not been given and no identifying videos would be sent.
Videos are sent only with the express permission and action of the user. Videos are not uploaded on default, the user must actively send them.
Metadata is the only data collected which is automatically uploaded and updated in real time. This includes only the specified data outlined above, and will only update as the user opens and interacts with the app.
Data sharing
Data collected by the app will only be used by the institutions involved in the research project. No third parties will be given access to the data unless expressly approved and regulated by the institutions’ ethical review boards.
Data retention/deletion
Data, including videos taken, will be securely stored for review and analysis. Users have the right to email kiits@kbh.ki.se to request copies of data collected or the destruction of their data.
Want to withdraw consent?
Please email kiits@kbh.ki.se with your written request to withdraw consent. Withdrawn consent discontinues the collection of any new data, but does not require the study team to destroy any data recorded prior to that point that had been previously consented for.
